Dear Hot Slasher Babe - Laverne

Dear Laverne, from Creepshow 2 the Raft segment,
I am so sorry you got your face ripped off by an alien lake monster.  A slow, painful death like that is no end for such a smoking hot babe like you.  You were so helpless in your final scene when the blob was underneath the raft; you tip-toed from plank to plank as the monster poked through the cracks with its slimy, deadly ooze.  You have really cute feet...were those your feet or an extras?  Anyways, I wanted to jump through the screen and into the lake to divert the blob's attention so you could swim to safety.  "Come and get me, blob!!! Come and get me, you bastard blob son of a bitch!!!"  I would have yelled,  "She's too damn hot to die!!!!!"

I knew there was no way in hell that Pancho guy was going to save you; he was trying to cop a feel while you were taking a nap!!  That's how the blob got the drop on you guys.  Shame on you, Pancho, you short, curly haired pervert.

I also wanted to jump through the screen and go toe to toe with that jerk you were dating.  What's up with that guy?  He's a good looking guy, tall with a total swimmer's bod, but c'mon, he threatened to hit you because you got scared!  You just witness your friend get devoured by some alien lake monster and you've got some meathead asshole threatening to punch your lights out.  With a raised fist he yells "Stop it, Laverne, I swear to god I'm gonna smoke you!  I mean it!"  I'm sorry you're last day on earth was filled with such hostility.

Laverne, I hope you're reading this tucked away in a cloud under god's wing...specifically designated for hot babes that died senseless, terrible deaths.  I hope the memory of having your face ripped off by a weird looking, blob type thing is long gone and you have accepted your absence from this world and the sadness you left behind.  Laverne, I hope I can do those things one day too.   Some day I will forgive the blob.  But not today.

Yours Always,
     GG

Sinister Review

A box of home movies thrusts a true crime writer and his family into the path of supernatural evil in Sinister from director Scott Derrickson.  Derrickson you may remember as the director of Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Ethan Hawke stars as Ellison Oswalt, a down on his luck writer looking for his first best seller in ten years.  He moves his family to a new town and a new home where grisly murders took place.  He doesn’t tell his wife or kids though...but they learn about it at school anyways, and his wife is pissed!!!

Written by Derrickson and first timer C Robert Cargill it is really a story of a man neglecting his family for the sake of his career. Instead it felt like an exercise in how many times can we make a guy go look for a noise in the dark with nothing but a flashlight or a baseball bat.

The acting definitely helped propel the narrative with good performances by Hawke and Juliet Rylance, the actress who plays the wife.  As they discuss their marriage we feel like a fly on the wall that has heard this conversation a dozen times before.  This leads us to a method we have seen a dozen times before: found footage.  The format is used decently here, both in the home movies and his personal VHS tapes which seem to conjure up his own personal ghosts and disappointment.

We get good performances from the children, a standout performance by James Ransome as deputy So and So and a “cameo” by Vincent D’Onofrio.  He plays a professor from the local college who specializes in the occult.  Creepy kid, new home, child abducting maniac, occult expert...heard this before?  Yeah, it’s called Insidious.

I found the sound design to be exceptional and there is a great scene with a lawnmower, but it doesn’t make up for the tired story line or the terrible ghost make-up.  Sinister is rated R for disturbing violent images and some terror, it has a run time of 110 minutes and it gets a 1 1/2 out of five stars on the gore score. The film is worth one watch for the gruesome kill scenes.

DEAR HOT SLASHER BABE

The first HOT SLASHER BABE of the month goes to Debbie from Friday the 13th part 3 in 3D.  Each month I will write a letter professing my undying love to a horror movie starlet.

Dear Debbie, from Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D,
You were so beautiful with a smoking hot bod...why did the director think we’d actually believe you were pregnant?  Were you offended by that at all?  And why would you date a guy that tries to get you to eat weed and offers to go get you beers?

Also, what kind of friends would make you sleep in the room with the hammock?  You’re pregnant remember?  I guess it did make it possible to get a really cool updated version of the Kevin Bacon kill from part 1.

But, Debbie, above all your beauty and charming qualities lies the fact that you read Fangoria magazine...and you'll do it in a hammock.  Thanks again, Debbie, we all loved you and you will be missed.

Sincerely,
     Gory Gary

If you nerds have any hot slasher babes we should write letters to let us know and we will get right on it!  We?  Who am I referring too?  It is just me.

Chernobyl Diaries

Six twenty-somethings take an extreme tour to the Chenobyl nuclear reactor.  A day of sight seeing and romantic picture taking turns into a night of despair as the group realizes they are not alone.  Written by Oren Peli, creator of the Paranormal Activity franchise and directed by first timer Bradley Parker, the film takes us to a barren, creepy landscape that we have never seen before.  Unfortunately, the story doesn’t do the same.  We go to a foreign location, our car breaks down, there are things trying to kill us.  The great thing about this simple story line however is the fact that it gets us right into the action.

Oren Peli gives a nod to the found footage genre, having his characters document their trip with a handheld video camera.  This device worked well because it established the characters and got us into the story quickly.  The acting is good overall, there are some hot babes but I’m not sure the script offered much in character development.  Dmitri Diatchenko gives the most rounded performance as an ex special forces dude who is now a tour guide badass.  You can tell he really feels bad for the people that died at Chernobyl and in turn you really feel for him.

Director Bradley Parker is best known for his visual effects work on movies like Fight Club, Red Planet, and Let Me In.  He chose a minimalist approach to the gore and mayhem, letting us imagine for ourselves what lurks in the toxic darkness.

Chernobyl Diaries is Rated R for violence, some bloody images and pervasive language and has a run time of 88 minutes.  It gets a 3 out of 5 on the gore score.  It’s not a great film but it’s definitely worth seeing.  The gore we do see is good, it’s got hot babes, had scary moments and overall kept me entertained.
